Ideas other than flowers for bridesmaids

Does anyone have any ideas for something the bridesmaids can carry other than a bouquet of flowers? I'm planning for an October church wedding.

You can do feather bouquets, small pumpkins with ribbon, wheat bouquets with just a few flowers thrown in, paper or feather flowers, prayer books, etc. It is really up to you. It can be anything comfortable enough to carry for an hour-ish.

I've seen lanterns, rosaries, clutches, etc. They can carry anything you'd like them to, really.

Also, I've always thought button bouquets and wire bouquets (http://manolobrides.com/2009/04/02/lovehate-the-bride-on-a-wire-edition/) are adorable ideas.

I have seen parasols, pinwheels, balloons, fans and nothing carried down the aisle.

I would at least stick to some variation on a "bouquet" of something.   It just looks awkward when the BMs just carry a fan or purse, etc.  It's like "Look! I am walking down the aisle to present this fan to the climate-control gods"  or something.

I like the idea of some sort of lantern.

You could do pomander balls in your colors. They''re still flowers, or tissue paper, but look great!
