Silk flowers?

I keep running into issues with florists and am about at my wits-end.  It had been suggested to me in the past to do silk flowers instead and my immediate reaction was that I did not want to do that at all.  I felt like it's a REAL wedding and I want REAL flowers, but am beginning to re-think this decision.

Do you all think silk flowers are tacky in weddings?  I had considered doing some silk and making the bouquets real, but that may prove difficult to mesh together.  I do know silk flowers will be easier to find in the colors I want, will be less expensive (I am on a tight budget), and can last forever.  Like my mom said, the ceremony arrangement can be put in our new home afterwards to remind us of the big day.  But I am still flashing back to how I want everything to be real.  I would just appreciate some input and opinions.  TIA

There are plenty of ways to save on flowers without going the fake route.  If you think you can DIY your bouquetsthe day before your wedding then go for it.  For centerpieces, go with non-floral items or a submerged flower.  Think candles, or fruit.  Google images has a ton of ideas that could be easy to replicate on your own.

  • I do not like silk flowers but that is purely a personal preference.

Whether a silk flower is tacky, depends on the quality of the flower and how it is styled.

There are lovely artificial flowers and you cannot tell that they are artificial.   Lovely flowers can still be styled in a tacky way.

Since it is your wedding and your budget, let your taste dictate the decision.

  • I totally agree... real flowers real wedding... the are symbolic of one perfect day in time...
Silk are about craft projects and decorating... real ones mean more...
    Im just opinionated...
  • I think silk flowers are okay. I still have the bridesmaid flowers from my cousin's wedding somewhere in my room and they are still pretty like they were then. I'm getting married in October and I'm planning on using silk flowers. They're cheaper and in my opinion they're pretty too. Whichever you choose I'm sure it will be beautiful.

  • We are doing silk flowers. so far, the only thing I'm missing is the white flowers and the ribbons and things to hold everything together. I've spent less than $20. But when I say we are on a budget, I mean we may be serving spaghetti-o's at the reception (lol) So anything real was way off budget for us.

  • I'm not opposed to artificial blooms, because they will last and you can get really nice ones that do look real, especially in centerpieces. HOWEVER, to get those really nice ones that you aren't sure about wanting anyway, you would have to pay almost as much as you would for the real thing unless you are using flowers that are out of season or rare.

As far as color goes,we had trouble at first because we are having a few of shades of blue as our colors, but only two flowers grow naturally blue, so our florist is painting some white flowers a dark blue for us. It kind of makes me feel like Alice (of wonderland fame) when I say it like that.

I'm getting real ones, having the bouquets done by the florist, and ordering the blooms for centerpieces through her and arranging them myself. We are using pretty sturdy flowers so I can assemble most of them in advance, but I'll have to add any hydrangeas in the day of.

eek, that got much longer than I had planned; i just really like flowers, I guess. In short, fake flowers may or may not save hassle/money. I'd say get the kind you really want, and save in other areas, like skipping professional hair, makeup, and nails. Budgeting is just a matter of deciding what is important to you :)

  • A cousin did silk flowers for the boutineres and bridesmaids bouquets. They looked very nice and made a lot of sense for her (winter wedding in North Dakota). I love real flowers, but think that you can really find a way to make fake ones work, especially if you look for the high quality ones. They'll only be tacky if they're arranged badly and too obvious.
