Wedding Ceremony & Reception Music Discussions

Reception playlist to share?

Does anybody have a reception playlist they could send me a link to? We are supposed to give our DJ one by Wednesday and i just realized I left ours on our old computer.

we are having a band play our receptions -- a friends band who does amazing covers of 80s and 90s rock, a little touch of popular hip-hop and they throw in some other wedding standards too. (basically, we wanna have a rockin good time at our wedding!)
during the cocktail hour and dinner, we will have a mix CD playing that we made. i am still picking songs for it, but they will all be fun, cute, kinda-quirky love songs. dire straits, jack johnson, the pixies, the cure... stuff that is a reflection on who we are and what we love.

kls114 thanks for the music info - I need it just as badly as PreppySailor!!  Also you can check out this website - www.weddingmuseum.com/tools/best-80s-songs.htm" target="_blank">http://www.weddingmuseum.com/tools/best-80s-songs.htm

It gives you songs in all different genres and time periods...

Picking music is tough!  My DJ had some good advice, he said to think of dinner and the cocktail hour music as really nice background music, but that the cocktail hour music should still get people in the mood to have a good time.  We have picked more upbeat, quirky selections for the cocktail hour: Cake, Jack Johnson, Mighty, Mighy Bosstones, etc. and jazz favorites for dinner and save the romantic songs and dance songs for the rest of the reception.

I know this isn't real helpful to you right now, but an idea for other Brides viewing this board.  In addition to picking our favorite songs, we are also asking guests to request a song when they RSVP for the wedding.  We've already gotten some fun ideas!  We'll then add all these songs to the request list for our DJ!  I'm excited to see what else people come up with!  :-)

Besides the songs that we love and the normal wedding music, we're making sure that the songs each of our parents danced to at their weddings.  Both of our sets of parents amazingly are still together and we want to honor that.  We're going to ask our DJ that they don't have to be at any particular time, just keep an eye out so that they're played when they have a chance to go out and dance to their song.  We thought it'd be a nice surprise for them.

We're doing a mix of Eric Clapton/U2/Van Morrisson-type soft rock/easy listening along with fun old school bands like the Temptations, Sam Cook, and the Beach Boys for cocktail hour and background music for dinner. The old school stuff is tame enough not to distract, but super fun and upbeat at the same time. And the newer stuff is beautiful music that a lot of people want at their wedding anyway, but it's too slow for dance music.

I would suggest staying away from wedding music websites, those are the same songs we have all heard at every single wedding, and that your guests will hear all summer at every other wedding they go to!
Dont be afraid to be unique, to let your guests see who you and your fiance are thru your music choices! play songs you have memories to, songs that speak about who you are, what you want for the future, things that are important to you. play songs that you love to rock out to! that just have a good beat, or a funky voice in them. or play songs you know your guests love. just have fun with it!

My fiance and I aren't hiring a DJ at all - we're getting sound equipment and hooking up his laptop with pre-selected playlists. We're both big music buffs and we can't stand rap, top-40 pop, or the stereotypical cheesy '80's and '90's love ballads (no Mariah Carey or Boyz to Men for us, please!). We're planning to use a lot of classic rock, crooner music (lots of Frankie, for sure), and some of our favorite off-beat selections too. We'll be using an iPod for the ceremony music and my best friend might be playing some acoustic stuff for the cocktail hour.

One of our wedding favors is going to be a "soundtrack" to our wedding, with our favorite songs from the day on it. Have fun with it, and make sure you're using music that you guys really like, not just "wedding music".

projectwedding.com has some very good lists for different occasions during the ceremony and reception, and it's a good mix of popular songs and those songs you love but don't really think about.

I'm with Ashley on this one.  We're just hooking up an ipodand letting it go.  I've been putting together my own playlists, and we'll be asking for some requests before hand as well.  It gives us a little more control, and I won't have to get annoyed at my own reception when Celine Dion starts playing....

I totally agree. It should be music that you know that YOU will have fun listening to. Music you will want to bounce around to. Music that, while you may be talking to someone at the reception, you hear first few chords and just exclaim: "I've GOTTA dance to this!" Brides look their prettiest when they're smiling imho, and music is something that makes me grin :)
We're both huge Pearl Jam fans, so I picked out like 7 Pearl Jam songs that I want to have played. I'm really glad that the majority of my wedding party is into them too, so we'll all be able to go crazy to their music together. I have an ipod playlist written out, but not organized. Besides Pearl Jam, I'm really excited about dancing to Somersault by Sia (for our first dance. very sweet, slow song.), All I Want is You by Barry Louis Polisar, and I'm Gonna Be by the Proclaimers. Plus we're going to play Never Gonna Give You Up by Rick Astley. Hilarious hilarious hilarious.

We are planning to do the same with our wedding itunes list. The only concern I have is things running smoothly with events being announced. You know... anouncing the wedding party, the cutting of the cake, first dance, all the fun stuff! Any suggestions?

Wow...thanks everybody!  We are 2 1/2 months out and haven't done anything to set up a playlist other than hearing songs on the radio every now and then and saying, "Oh, that one for the reception!"

I asked my cousin if he would do announcements for my reception for this reason.  Much cheaper :-)
