ceremony music advice?

is it better to have recorded music for the ceremony or to have a string quartet? our dj service that we are looking at provides ceremony music but what would be better?

I would say it depends on your budget.

Unless it's an outdoor wedding (and, even then) I definitely prefer live music at a wedding, even if it's just a piano/organ.  I would love a string quartet, but we have compromised a bit and have hired a single violin, piano/organist, and a vocalist.

If you have the money I would definitely do some live musicians for your ceremony and keep the DJ for the reception.
