father/daughter disaster??

I am trying to sort out my wedding playlist before everything else piles on and I forget about it. i'm trying to find a song that fit me and my father. For 18 years of my life he was drunk all the time. We had no type of relationship at all. A few years ago he stopped drinking and ever since we have been getting closer, but it's still a bit odd since I lived with him for this long and barely ever knew anything about him. I had tried for years to be a daddy's girl, but he blew me off so i figured if he didn't care to get to know me I won't bother either. Now we're not exactly close but we're working on the rift. Any suggestions for a song?? Nothing about tucking me in or being his angel, my sister was his favorite and he was always too drunk. Please help!

Rather than looking for a song that describes your relationship with your father, have his favorite song played for the father/daughter dance. If you don't know what it is, ask him to choose or ask him for a list.

I agree with avoiding songs that describe your relationship with your father. What about songs like:

    Somewhere Over the Rainbow

    Unforgettable: Nat King Cole

The Way You Look Tonight by Frank Sinatra or Tony Bennett has a slower version

Can You Feel The Love Tonight: Elton John

Good luck, and I'm glad to hear that you're working on the rift.

yeah, the relationship songs might be an issue. I have a similar problem I didn't meet my dad until I was 18. I'm only 24 now and we have been really close since we met, but I want to dance to Heartlands I loved her first. I have always wanted to dance to that song, but I feel like it isn't an accurate portrayal of our relationship. He didn't tuck me in or read me bed time stories, you know? I think it is great that you guys are working on your relationship and I wish you the best of luck. You could try a modern song. I was considering John Mayer Daughters.

I'm right there with you. I have no great affection for my father so I don't want some sappy song either.

I am struggling and even thought of just not doing a father/daughter dance (although i really dont want that) but i am not close at all w/ my father. I am actually having my grandfather who has always been there giving me away and my stepdad who has done alot for me is going to be there so trying to find a song that could incorporate all 3 of them. starting w/ grandpa then my dad and ending w/ my stepdad or backwards.

I'm not doing a father-daughter dance since my dad passed when I was a kid, but if he were around I think I'd pick "My Way" by Sinatra. I like the lyrics and it lets everyone know that life isn't perfect and it doesn't matter if everything happened the way everyone thinks it should have. You're here now and thats what matters.

My dad and I were close but started to drift when he picked up the bottle 6 years ago and even though he is doing better now its still weird so I decided on a version of"Sweet Child Of MIne" that was done by Taken By Trees. Its not mushy but still is appropriate for a father daughter/dance.
