Wedding Ceremony & Reception Music Discussions

I-Pod instead of DJ

In order to save money, we're thinking about using an ipod instead of a DJ for the reception music. One of our friends did it and it worked just fine. The only issue I saw with it at their wedding was that they had no announcer. There was nobody to announce their entrance, cake cutting, toasts, etc. It made for very awkward transitions and a lot of big moments were just lost all together. Any suggestions for this?

Re: I-Pod instead of DJ

  • You could designate a guest/friend/relative to be the announcer

  • I have been to several weddings with this and one had no announcer and it was awkward! The others designated a person to be the "DJ" and just make sure people were enjoying a certain style of music (if not, they'd change it). It definitely makes things run smoother and they can give instructions if certain special dances or events are coming up.

We are having a friend do this for our wedding and are giving him specific instructions so he knows what to do. It also gives you more control of how you want the dance to go :)
  • We had an Ipod reception but no dancing.  My sister asked for a job to do (my family is weird and like to demand jobs at these things.  They find it rude if you ask them just to be guests)  I gave her control of the ipod and announcements.  It went great because she's loud and fun. lol

  • We are getting married this coming Saturday and are having an IPOD wedding. We are making playlists that will just play through, and my brother will change the files for the different transitions. We are asking an upbeat Uncle to do all of the announcing and an aunt to make sure the uncle gets the job done! :) Im a little nervous, but ive read so much good stuff online that I know it will be great! Note: the hardest part was finding and downloading all of the music and choosing what music to play for what. :) Good luck!
  • Ask one of your craziest and most likeable friends to announce! The iPod is definitely fine, just make sure transitions and events are made known!
  • Thanks for the advice guys!
