Wedding Ceremony & Reception Music Discussions

Different Types of Music on Wedding Playlist

We're having a string quartet for the ceremony and then an iPod for the reception. We have four types of songs on the playlist: pop/light rock (Beatles, Billy Joel), 1940's swing ("Take the A Train," etc.), polkas, and Broadway show tunes ("Get Me to the Church on Time," etc.).

I think it might be jarring to have one type of song followed by another, for example, a Beatles song followed by a polka. So I'm thinking of doing "waves" of different types of songs: a few polkas, some pop songs, a few swing tunes, and so on, rather than just a jumble of different types.

What do you think?

  • I like the "waves" idea... it would be strange if you are out on the dance floor swing dancing then all of a sudden its polka music...

  • You should time the sets to what will be going on; I.e. 40's music for cocktails or dinner, and save the more rousing sets for later when people will hopefully be dancing. Love the idea, though'
