Wedding Ceremony & Reception Music Discussions

Overwhelmed!

So I gave my DJ all the information he needs to build us playlists from a questionnaire he gave us. We went over it on the phone earlier today and he said he had a good idea of what we wanted played. Great!

He said he would send me some sample lists of music. What I thought he meant was that he was going to send me a previous playlist he used at another wedding to look at. What he sent me instead was a generic sample list of over 400 songs for the cocktail hour and another 400 for the reception.

What on earth am I supposed to do with these?! I don't have time to build our playlists! If I did I would have put them all on an Ipod and given some kid $20 to press play.

I'm sure there was just a misunderstanding, but with 3 weeks to go until my wedding this made me panic. :-/

Okay, first of all - BREATHE!!!  I know it doesn't seem like it, but 3 weeks is plenty of time to get this squared away.  But I'm a little confused - did your dj give you the list to approve each song, or does he really want you to put songs in order of how you want them played?  If he's just looking for a confirmation that yes, this is the type of music you're looking for, that's fine.  But if he wants you to create playlists quite frankly I agree that that part is his job and you wouldn't be out of line to tell him so.

Either way, I think you should sit down with your fiance and quickly read over the list.  If there are any songs that you both absolutely hate, go ahead and scratch them off.  And if there are any songs that you absolutely must have, then write those in.  If you find a song on the list that you don't know, well you can look it up on youtube, or just cross it off.  Since time is a factor I'd cross it off, but that's just me.  Then give the list back to the dj and tell him to stick to the list, and trust him to do his job.  Like you said, if you had wanted to choose every song on the playlist, you would have gone the iPod route.  Your dj is a professional who has (hopefully) had lots of wedding experience and will know which songs to play to get people up and dancing.

Make sure he knows what songs to use for the parent dances, cake cutting, etc, and also make sure that he has a feeling of what you guys like and don't like (which you've already done).  Then leave the rest to him.

Hope this helps and good luck!

It's going to be ok! :)
Each night leading up to the wedding you and your man can spend half an hour going thru it- make it some down time. Enjoy it. Before you know it you will have gone thru the list with time to spare!

    Thanks ladies!

The lists he sent me are sample lists which is why I was thrown for a loop. I had, for example, said no 80's music and 1/3 of one of the lists was from the 80's. My FI and I sat down and just pulled out which musical artists we were okay with and which were a definate no. The list was sent to the DJ (who has 15 years experience so hopefully he can figure this out.) We're asking him to now build our playlists for our cocktail hour and reception. Resonable right?

    Hopefully it all works out.

Glad you're feeling better about the music.  I'd say check that one off your list and enjoy the rest of your planning!
