Wedding Ceremony & Reception Music Discussions

Do I even need music?

I'm tossing around the idea of having a carnival themed wedding reception. In my head there will be lots to do (for example, photobooth, carnival games, and TONS of food). Do I really need music? Truth be told, I'm not sure people would even notice if it was there or missing. I might just load up my ipod for background.... but what would I put on it? Does anyone know of any carnival appropriate music?

I think your ipod would be fine. But I would definitely have some music. Like shoebie said, dancing is pretty key at a wedding. Especially for you first dance, etc. And I think background music would be nice.

As for actual music, the Moulin Rouge soundtrack/songs is amazing I think, and has some really fun ones. :)

My best friend didn't use any music at all during her ceremony or reception, which I thought would be odd, but it was such a close group of friends that we just had a blast talking and catching up and generally raising hell, lol.  Didn't even miss the music.  That said, I want to get my groove on at my wedding.  I don't think that there's a right or wrong, you know what you want and what kind of environment will be fun for your guests.

I'd definitely have background music playing throughout the entire reception.  People may not notice it.... but I am pretty sure there will be those that will notice its absence.  Like PPs have said, music sets the tone of the day and gives people something to listen to if they don't feel like playing games.

I agree you should have some kind of background music, even if you are not wanting dancing.

I am an actual carney, and you can get carnival music (like the stuff you hear on the merry-go-round), but I think having summer-y songs would be appropriate. You are from the Lehigh Valley, as am I, and I think going down to the Jersey shore as a fun pastime. Songs like Under the Boardwalk, Surfin' Safari, Wipeout, Summertime Blues, In the Summertime, California Gurls, etc. would fit in.
If you want people to dance and have fun, circus songs can get really annoying. It may be okay to add 1 circus/carnival song for every 4-5 normal pop songs, just to keep up with your theme.
