Wedding Ceremony & Reception Music Discussions

Solo violinist who's a friend or unknown trio

Hello,

Weather permitted, our ceremony will be outdoors and we would like a string ensemble for the ceremony music as well as cocktail hour.  A friend's husband is a professional violinist and he's very good so I know the quality that I'm getting, but I'm worried that a solo will not be enough for an outdoor ceremony.  We are not necessarily getting a price break using him although he's offering more time in planning.  Our other option is a trio from a typical company that doesn't offer much help in music planning, won't come to the rehearsal dinner, and pretty much shows up 15 min. before they are to start playing.  Any opinions on which is better???   The venue is www.lingrowfarm.com if that helps.

I am actually a cellist, and I play at occaisionally at some weddings.  I think a solo violinist would be fine.  (We are going to actually have a harpist at our *hopefully* outdoor ceremony).  If you are really worried, you could always have him miked.  If you are looking at other people, I would definitely hear them play first.  Good luck!

Thanks, Knotties!  This really helped ease my concerns.

I also just realized that most likely that we as the bride and groom will not hear most of the music beyond the few processional songs as our ceremony will be short.  I will be inside during the prelude and we will be taking pictures during the cocktail hour.  We decided to let the MOG provide some input since she's a classical music fan and is probably one of the few on the guest list who would care one way or the other.

My BFF is an Irish fiddler who played at our wedding.  There was no problem of anyone hearing her.  In fact, I heard her on the third floor of the house where I was waiting for the signal to start down the stairs.
