ive fallen in love with the idea of a slow dance version of you are my sunshine for our first dance. but ive recently come across the fact that the song is super sad! its about a lover leaving. here are the full lyrics:

i was contimplating the idea of using just the first two verses....idk what do you think?

if it makes you happy you should use it. most of the songs i love do not have wedding friendly lyrics. (as in they are about love lost etc, not swearing) you could also try to find an instrumental version.  my SO teaches ballroom dancing and loves the tennessee waltz. which is similar to your song.

it was my first pick for father daughter but fell in love with my little girl by Tim McGraw (doesnt really help you but it may make you feel better that i had the same thoughts)

I don't know how many people know all the lyrics, but I love that song...but I would probably feel sick at my stomach if I witnessed a couple I really liked dancing to that as their first song.  Just like "You've lost that lovin' feeling" is not appropriate as a slow dance just because it's a slow song!  Don't you want your first dance song to be a happy, memorable song between the two of you, rather than a breakup song?   I personally think a song that says "you've shattered all my dreams" does not make for a good first dance, but like I said, most people don't know the words, so most probably won't know the difference.
