Wedding Ceremony & Reception Music Discussions

Music instrumental

So, my fiance and I were thinking of having instrumental music from places our families emigrated from for the prelude.  This would basically be instrumental pieces from top composers of Estonia and Norway.  Does the prelude being instrumental dictate that the remainder of the ceremony songs be instrumental as well, or is it ok to change to songs with words?

I think it will be ok to change to songs with music. A couple of weddings I've been to did this and it sounded fine to me.

Hi! I just saw your post. I am a manager of a string quartet in Pennsylvania. From my experience, I believe it would be great to have music from those two countries. If I were you, I would ask the organist or ensemble who will be performing if you could give them some special requests. Your guests may enjoy a nice selection of baroque music that they may recognize during the prelude. People often like to hear familiar tunes. Then you could insert a few special selections toward the end of the 30 min. prelude. You could also use the candle lighting moment to hear a favorite song from one of your countries. You could also use a singer at any point, as much or as little as you want. These are my two warnings: Best not to have prelude all as one type of music and midway thru the service switch to a totally different style. (ex: all classical for prelude and rock midway thru for the rest of the time.) Occasional different special pieces are normal. Also best to buy the music in piano form or string quartet form and give it to the leader of your group. If they have enough time to learn it, at least they dont have to search for it and you may save some money by doing the searching yourself. Not a good idea to just give a group like that a recording and ask them to work off of just that. Not many classical performers just play by ear.
    Hope this helps.
