Wedding Ceremony & Reception Music Discussions

Music Logistics Help!

Hi Ladies,

I have booked my ceremony music and my reception music, but I'm having a little trouble figuring out logistics for my cocktail reception & was looking for some suggestions. So, I am getting married at the same venue as my reception, but my ceremony is upstairs and then my guests will go downstairs for my cocktail reception then will go back upstairs an hour later for dinner. For my ceremony I have a harpist and for dinner I have a DJ. I really don't want to have another vendor for cocktail hour.

I can pay an extra $50 to have my harpist stay for cocktail hour, but I'm afraid that the transition may be awkward. She'll have to play until the last guest leaves my ceremony and then bring her harp downstairs to set up in front of everyone-- It might be 15 minutes or so without music? Do you think that's okay? I don't want it to be an awkward transition but I don't want to have 3 music vendors if it's really not necessary. I don't think I can have my DJ because he'll need to set up his equipment during that time since my room will be turning.

I'm sure I'm overthinking this.... any easy suggestions? Thanks!

When I hired my DJ he offered to set up a sound system during the cocktail hour to play a cd.  The service was overpriced, but it might be what you're looking for.  I wouldn't make the harpist move.  Not only is an orchestral harp really difficult to move, but she'll probably need to retune once she gets set up.  Does your venue itself have a sound system?

You should talk to your DJ about this. Mine has a smaller set up for cocktail hour, so he doesn't have to set up his whole spiel twice. It may cost more than the harpist charges, but it would assure that you won't have any down time in between.
