Instrumental vs. Orignal with lyrics

Ok so we're trying to finalize our music list before we send it back to the DJ, and I can't decide between going with orignal songs with lyrics for the ceremony and instrumental versions by Vitamin String Quartet. Is it odd to go with the lyrical versions? I'm a huge music buff and not traditional at all. I wouldn't mind the lyrics , but I've never heard it done at weddings before. What do you guys think?

Re: Instrumental vs. Orignal with lyrics

  • Are you able to use a live musician at all for the ceremony?  I know I am biased, being a harpist, but it is really difficult to get a recording to end on a good note when you walk down the aisle.  Live musicians can ad lib a little bit and come to an end much more smoothly.  Does that make sense?
  • We had the same dilema when planning our music. We ended up going with instrumental for the ceremony and originals for the reception. However, I don't think it's odd at all to play the lyrical versions at the ceremony.

  • If the lyrics have a special meaning to you, then go with the lyrical versions, but IMO, the instrumental versions bring a new life to the songs, adding class where there might not be before. I also think the lyrics could be a bit distracting for some. If a song has special meaning, then use the lyrics and put a note in your program :)
