Wedding Ceremony & Reception Music Discussions

But I hate dancing....

Straight and to the point, my dilemma is as follows: My fiance and I both hate to dance, and we don't really like any music that is "perfect" for the first dance.  I know the wedding and reception and all that is however we want it to be, but I feel like everyone will think it strange that we skip the whole first dance altogether...and maybe the father/daughter dance, too.  No one in my family is big on dancing, especially not my fiance.

Just any thoughts, has anyone else skipped the first dance scene, or seen it done at other weddings? Was there a weird reaction?  It's one of the few tradition things to do that hasn't faded out...but I want it faded out of my reception.

  • If you feel like it would be weird, then tell your DJ (or band or whoever) to just keep playing the music and encourage everyone on the dance floor. I don't think anyone will really notice unless you guys say something and if they do, it won't be a big deal. Just make sure that it's okay with all the parents about not doing a dance with them. Some parents really look forward to it and some don't mind if it's gone.
  • We did a first dance, but that was the only spotlight event that we did -- no parent dances, no garter/bouquet toss. I think you'd be totally fine to skip a first dance if that's what you and your FI want.
