How long to hire a band at the reception?

If my reception is open at like, say, 5:30...and it starts at like 6 though...when should I hire the band to play? Should they play while people wait for us to arrive or should they just play after dinner?

     Our cocktail hour will be one of those pianos that plays on it's own, then dinner, then band plays immediately after dinner.
