Wedding Ceremony & Reception Music Discussions

Both band and dj?

Can i have both a band and a dj? I have no clue how weddings work. We have 6 hours at the reception venue and i'd love a rat-pack/big band type band but then for later in the eve i think it would be fun to have a dj. is this expensive or over the top? i don't know where to begin.
thanks so much for your thoughts.

If you scroll down some posts this was asked recently. Maybe you can get some suggestions/opinions from there.

To answer your question though--you ultimately can do whatever you like. It might be a bit pricey but if you can swing it and you want it--go for it! I know some weddings that I have been to that had both had each have sets of music and they (band/DJ) worked together to make the evening flow based on your specifics and needs.

I like this idea (especially the Rat Pack theme). You could do one for your cocktail hour and then a DJ for dancing. You might end up actually spending the same amount this way.

The down side is that you might get charged the same full price for the band, even if you don't use them the whole night. So where a 13piece big band might cost 3K for the entire evening, they will still cost 3K even if they don't play the whole night.

What about looking for a band that can also DJ? I have heard of bands that do both... between their live sets they'll just do some Dj-ing! If you wanted the end of the night to be only a DJ you could have the band pack up & head out, but keep one member around to DJ... maybe just negotiate to pay that one person a little more? I bet it would be a lot cheaper than booking separate bands & Djs.

I think that if it fits in with your budget, than you could definitely do it!

A lot of people near me do this! Half the night with a classic rock kind of band, then a DJ later! I think its great!
