how long is reasonable to wait for wedding pics/video??

Ok, this is my first (& final...ha ha) marriage, so i want to make sure I understand all the "etiquette" when it comes to the photographer.

How long is reasonable/normal to wait for:
1. wedding proofs
2. finished photos and dvd after getting your edit requests back to the photog??

My photographer is taking what seems to me to be an unreasonably long time to do my edits, final video, etc.. and get my final package back to me.  She got my announcements back VERY late, after much persistence, and now she seems to be taking a while on editing the photos I requested and getting them done.  but I know alot of times it does take a while...  So before I start making a fuss, i want to know what is normal in the professional photography world...??

(My contract does not state, by the way.. in case you would say to check the contract.)  ; )

The pics are really really great, and i don't want to tick her off by being a pain, b/c I still want her to do a great job on the rest of the job.  my photos are literally in her hands, you know...  But I would love to get everything finalized and wrapped up before my 1 year anniversary!!  (it hasn't been THAT long, btw...just saying).

Any help, insight, experience, etc you could give would be greatly apreciated.  Thanks!!

  • The proposed contracts we reviewed had the photos due 2 to 4 weeks after the wedding.
  • I am a wedding photographer and state in my contract that the final products will be delivered between 4-6 weeks after the wedding. I always try to deliver on the earlier side of this time range, and when I can before 4 weeks is even up. Hope this helps, some photographers like to take longer, and some way earlier.

Anywhere from 4-8 weeks is usually fairly standard. I live in a resort area, where the majority of our weddings happen in a few short months (vs several weddings spread out throughout the year) so that means that the editing process can take a little longer having several weddings so close together.
  • We do wedding films and, depending on the time of year, it can take between 12-14 weeks to get the video.  It take a week or two to edit a wedding and if your doing sometimes three a weekend, you can see we get backed up very easily.

  • Since you accepted a contract that doesn’t state the delivery time, your vendor can take as long as is reasonable.  This is open to interpretation but can easily be up to 6 or even 9 months. Longer than that might be unreasonable.  I don’t think they would be “ticked off” if you politely asked them when they think it might be ready.  FYI, our contract states “approximately 8-12 weeks”.  Depending on the time of year and our edit queue, we sometimes deliver in half that time.  Good luck!  P.S.  I am a successful full-time videographer in the DC area and after hundreds of events; I feel I am qualified to offer this advice.
