8hrs coverage - what does that mean

I see most photograhers say they cover 8hrs on your wedding day... my question is what does that mean... if your getttin married at a church and the reception is later in the day... that is more than 8hrs a photographer needs to be there... do they not count a few hours inbetween the church and reception?  How does this work out?

8 hours means that they will be at your wedding for 8 hours.
If you have them come at 1:00 pm to take photos while you are getting ready - the clock starts then and your photographer will stay until 9:00 pm.

They do not go off the clock on the time between your ceremony and reception.
If you require their services for longer than the 8 hours, they will charge you a per hour fee for the extra time.

8 hrs start when the photographer arrives. In between the ceremony and the reception the photographer will be busy taking your wedding photos. He is still working. In between is when you will take the bulk of your photos.
