How long to wait for photographer?

We live in FL and are getting married in NJ this upcoming July. We found a photographer we love in FL who shot our engagement pictures and they turned out to be exactly what we wanted. They offered to travel to NJ for our wedding (we cover expenses, of course) and since with travel costs they were still cheaper than the NJ photographers we got quotes from we quickly agreed.

That should have been the difficult part, right? I have been asking for a contract for over 3 weeks at this point. I finally got one but all of the event details (date, location, time, etc.) were left blank. The only thing filled in was their name and how much money we owed.

In addition, our venue requires the photographer to have 2 different kinds of insurance and they will not give us a direct answer as to if they have it or not. They are beginning to seem extremely unprofessional to me at this point, despite the fact that I love their work.

I should add that this is a bit more complicated because the photographers fiance ended up being our current realtor and we're under contract to purchase a house. I'm somewhat concerned that saying we don't want them as our photographers anymore might impact our progress on the house (it's a short sale). Any advice is appreciated :)

Re: How long to wait for photographer?

  • Could you schedule a meeting in person? That way you could go over the contract together, print out one that's filled out, and both sign it then?

I never had to deal with the licenses. Make sure you get a clear answer before you sign the contract. You can definitely word it as "We really want you as our photographer! This is important so that the venue doesn't refuse you entrance the day of our wedding." The venue is then the bad guy, not you.
