student photographers

does anyone have experience using student photographers? My brother is an art major and recommended a classmate who's willing to photograph the entire wedding for $500 (the average price for a pro around here is $2000-5000). She's talented, but I wanted to know if anyone had also gone with a student photog? What your experience?

Re: student photographers

  • I think the "rules" for hiring a student are probably the same as for any photographer - ask to see samples of her work, ask if she's ever done an event before (taking photos of people while everyone's trying to party is pretty different from artistically photographing a leaf on the sidewalk, so you'll want to make sure she has at least some idea of what she's in for) and ask for references (people she's worked with in the past who can speak to the quality of her work).  Since your brother recommends her, that's a good sign, but find out if she's done paid work for anyone else (or work in an internship, or unpaid work for the school newspaper or something, you get the idea) and ask if some of those people would be willing to speak with you about her.

Personally, I'd be particularly interested in getting references from internships/other clients/possibly professors, because I'd want to make sure she has a professional work ethic - sometimes, some students can be a little flaky, and the last thing you want in a wedding photographer is "flaky."
