Point of engagement pics???

I am just recently engaged (less than a month) and since I am new to this whole engagement thing, I need LOTS of help.  I have heard of people getting engagement pictures, however I am VERY confused about what the point is of getting them??  What do you do with the engagement pictures??  Is this something to not worry about and just skip??  PLEASE HELP!!!!

Thanks sooo much in advance!

You don't have to do them. We are using them on our STD's, and also as a keepsake. I will probably make FI a scrapbook for our 1 year anniversary (of being married) and include some of those in there.

My wife & I did engagement pics & a video. 8 years later we love them & the video. Our kids are fascinated, especially with the video. Mommy & daddy before they were married! Our reasoning behind getting them is,

One, posterity. They will ultimately belong to your kids & their kids. A good photographer can capture your personalities & take really good pictures of you & your fiancée that are really fun to look at. We still look at our wedding pics occasionally... and our boys (6,4, & 3) like to look at them more than we do... You want to look at them again?? OK.

Two, if you are going to have a professional wedding photographer at your wedding... and you want really good photographs. Its best to get to know them during an engagement shoot & seriously, get used to being in front of a camera. That way you are ready on the big day. Thats my long thought out take on the subject.

A big congrats on your coming wedding. It is obvious I highly recommend engagement, as well as Bridal portraits. Don't think of the present but the future.

    Best to you,

Many couples use them for STD's.  I made a photobook out of them and used that as our guest sign-in book (also very popular).  And like the PP said, it is also a nice way to get to know your photographer before the wedding and have some pictures of a very exciting time in your life.  Our E-pics were built into our package, but you can totally skip them if you want to.

I like shooting engagements because it allows me and my couple to get to know one another beforehand - in a relaxed environment, have some fun, and get some great shots in the process. Most couple use them for STDs or favors or simply to decorate the cocktail hour. You don't have to use them for anything, but it's a nice way to become comfortable and build a rapport with your photographer BEFORE the wedding. Do you really want someone you DON'T know shooting you getting ready? lol

At first I thought the idea was silly but am now really glad that our photographer insisted on them. Your photographer is goign to be around you for almost your whole wedding day. It's a really good opportunity to get to now how he/she works and for them to get to know you.

The point of it is that you get used to be being your photos taken by a professional wedding photographer. You will feel comfortable in front of the camera before your wedding day and you won't look artificial on your wedding photos. Believe or not you can get used to the feeling that you are in front of the camera. After an engagement photo session you will have much better wedding photos. Also, you see the results of the engagement photos shoot and you will 100% trust your photographer!
    I hope it helps.

Many get them for save the dates but I think they are important to also become familiar with your photographer and how they work so things run more smoothly with them at your wedding.
