Shower/engagement party question?

My son and future DIL live one the opposite coast from us.  We havn't met her yet but they are visiting this summer.

The wedding is in her home town and most friends and relatives won't get to meet her till after the wedding.

Would it be appropriate for me to have a gift card shower or something when they are here?

This will be the only time till after the wedding for our family and friends to meet her and to celebrate before they are married?


Please give me your honest thoughts?  I want to do this right!  I don't want to be one of "those" MIL's!!!!!!!!!!!

    The people we would invite to the "shower" engagement party - they would be all invited to the reception that is in our hometown.

    So they wouldn't be at the actual wedding - they would be invited to the out of town wedding and the in town reception? 

    Does that clarify?  We wouldn't just be inviting people for the giftcards, they would be invited to the wedding and the reception that would be in our hometown?

    I think it should just be an engagement party. Forget the gift aspect. It is a good idea to have a get-together so everyone can meet her before the HTR.
