Engagement Party Etiquette?

So two of my bridesmaids have offered to throw my fiance' and I an engagement party.  Is that normal or should it be thrown by a family member if it is thrown at all?  Honestly, I haven't been to very many engagement parties and I just can't remember.  My fiance' doesn't want to 'put anyone out' so to speak and would prefer a casual come and go type event at the neighborhood bar where we met for the first time after winking at each other on match.  :)  I love the sentimentality of that, but is that typical or appropriate?

Thanks for any help/advice!  :)

Anyone, except the bride and groom to be, may host the engagement party. The hosts should decide the number of guests, location, and budget for the party. Anyone who is invited to the engagement party, must be invited to the wedding.
