Rehearsal Dinner - Please Help!

So, for our rehearsal dinner, we are planning on going to a family style italian restaurant.  We are planning on a set menu (several main courses), and the dinner rolls and salad are provided (much like Olive Garden).  Of course, we will offer the choice of water, tea, and soft drinks.  Any alcohol will be available at the restaurant bar, in a pay-your-own-way scheme.

My questions is for a fixed dinner menu, is a dessert selection required???  I was in my best friend's wedding, and their rehearsal dinner menu was also fixed, but dessert was not an option.

What are the guidelines for this?  I've tried searching for this and I can't find anything.
Thanks!

100% agree with Stage. I'd certainly appreciate a dessert choice, but I understand if there isn't one.

ditto stage.  But if it's in your budget, the RD might be a nice time to have a groom's cake!
"Trix, it's what they/our parents wanted. Why so judgemental? And why is your wedding date over a year and a half ago? And why do you not have a groom's name? And why have you posted over 12,000 posts? And why do you always say mean things to brides?" palegirl146

Ditto this. At RD's I usually see a cake for dessert that the hosts or the couple provided for the end of the meal and the bride and groom to be cut the first piece as they will the following evening at their wedding.

It can be a traditional cake or a grooms cake, whatever is more in your budget or to your liking. But like pp's mentioned, dessert isn't necessary, but it's definitely appreciated. HTH!

If you're not serving alcohol, at least serve dessert. Try a grooms cake, they usually go over very well.

I definitely agree that you should serve dessert and tea/coffee.

Also, make sure that your venue allows outside dessert. They may want you to select from their menu.
