You should have it when someone offers to host it.  Usually no more than a month or two before would be an ideal time.

They're usually held in the 3 months before the wedding.

My bridal shower will be held 2 months before the wedding, bachelorette party 1 month before. Here is a website for themes you can suggest to your maid of honor who should host the bridal shower for you: http://www.hostesswiththemostess.com/themes/bridal_showers/bling_bride/party_decor

actually, anyone can host a shower for you, it's not required for the MOH to do it.

Ditto Melko, anyone can offer to host your shower.. your mom.. your BP.. your aunt.. your grandma.. your FMIL.. etc..

To answer your original question, bridal showers are typically thrown within the few months leading up to the wedding. Mine was going to be in April, but with some family health problems and my busy BM's going on vacations and such, it was pushed to a month before the wedding. I've attended bridal showers anywhere from 3 months before the wedding to a week or two before. HTH!

You usually want it a few months before your wedding.  My shower was in November or December (thats sad that I actually can't remember when it was- oh well that was years ago) and my wedding was in February. You want it close to your wedding but not so close that you are going insane with last minute preparations.  Yet again, you usually leave it up to the host (usually MOH or BM but not required) to decide when they would like to do it as long as it is okay with your schedule.  Im hosting a shower for my friend a month before her wedding.  I wish it was a little earlier, but it was the only time my schedule, MOH, brides and brides mom was clear.
