Engagement party invitation wording

I need a tactful way of saying that an engagement party is adults only and that we prefer small children not attend.

    First off, I hope you're not hosting your own engagement party.

    As far as your question goes, you don't. You address the invitation to only those who are invited. If someone attempts to RSVP for their child, simply say, "I'm so sorry but the invitation was only for you and Mr. Smith. We're looking forward to seeing you!" No lengthy explanation is needed.
