What's this world coming to?

Yesterday, I was visiting with the receptionist when a lady and her younger daughter came in and asked for our crisis counselor.  I wasn't really paying attention and then they decided to leave without seeing the cous.  Then, our receptionist got mad and told me this:  They were there to see our crisis counselor to get some food out of the pantry we have for some of our struggling families.  Then, we found out that the family doesn't even have a kid at our school!  So not only could she not wait for FREE food but they don't even have a student of ours that would have benefitted from our pantry.  I was just wondering how lazy you have to be that you can't even wait for free food?

Probably doesn't even need the free food... just wants to snag some so she can buy cigarettes instead.

I know that was highly judgemental and really inappropriate... but I just have little faith in people anymore, in general.

Well, in trying to keep the faith in people, I will say this...

Maybe she was embarassed by being there - asking for the food, so waiting just made it that much worse for her.  I am known to have a bleeding heart and situations like that just break it.  I hate to think that anyone, regardless of their circumstances, not have food (grammar??).  It makes me sad (and makes me want to adopt all of their children, but that's a whole different issue).  I hope that the lady, whatever she was going through, was able to find food for her and her child.  :(

Could the receptionist have said something to her or acted in a way that communicated the fact that she didn't think the woman had a right to the food since her daughter didn't go to school there?  I'm with Brianna, that there could have been a lot of reasons for leaving, being uncomfortable being a lot more likely than being lazy.  I can't imagine why that would be anyone's assumption.

I am with you Tiffany but I can see your point too Brianna.  I have a very big soft spot for kids and I feel so bad for them because its not their fault their parents can't always provide for them.  I am proud of the mom for doing what she has to to get food for her child.  I also know times are hard on everyone right now but that food pantry is for people at that school that need the food.  What if that mom got food and then another family came in and need food but they didn't have enough because they gave some to the other lady.  There are lots of options out there to get help.  I know that it can be an embarrassing situation and I don't even want to think of how I would handle it if I was put in the same situation.  I think the mom had the best intentions but that food should be left for the families of the school.

    N&M,
No I was there when she greeted her, with a smile and kindness in her voice.  I gave them their visitor's stickers and smiled at both.  She greeted these two people just as she does everyone else.  She likes Pres. Obama too, just like you, so she's much nicer than I am.

I would think that, if you're too embarassed, then once you decided to do it, you would go through with it.  I have also heard that some of our families, when they go to check out what is in our pantry, complain about there not being anything good there and leave.

While my school is in a good area, we have a lot of families that are no longer in the position to give as freely to the less fortunate in our school community.  Some of our families who used to be very well off, can barely afford to stay in their houses due to layoffs.

I give to every red kettle I pass to during this time of year.  Last year, we got five Angels off the Salvation Army Angel Tree at North Park.  I have given to homeless men on the side of the street who heap blessings upon me because they are so grateful.  Showing a little bit of gratitude is not unreasonable.

Um yeah, people can and do abuse the system.  Probably 50% of people or more if I had to put a # to it.   Unfortunately, I have known more than a few of them.

I also witness them in the grocery store on a regular basis.

I like to think the way Brianna does! We have a salvation army near me and I've volunteered there. If you hear their stories you realize sometimes you are just two steps away from that yourself. It's sad and when you see those parents and kids you just pray they are able to get to something better.

I guess I really don't see the big deal about them taking some food. I wouldn't of thought they were lazy cause they didn't stay. How much food did they take? I understand the food is for your students and families but their human beings, all human beings get hungry. If you would of known they weren't from your school, would you guys turned them away? I know Jesus wouldn't.

Ummm, they refused to wait until our administrator could come take them.  That was my biggest point.  They weren't going to turn them away.  Pretty sure Jesus wouldn't be blaming us for attempting to help them.

Unfortuanetly DH's sis one of those that is abusing the system and it kills me.  She was working claiming she made $3000 a month (under the table) but was on food stamps.  She lives with DH's ex wife because she "can't afford rent".  If she is making $3000 a month and is on food stamps what is she spending her money on?  Well I guess somehow someone found out and she was asked some questions about her employment and instead of fessing up and telling them she now has a job she just quit her job and is now still on food stamps.  She has a 9 yr old daughter that has picked up on this and now tells the school she can't afford lunch so she gets free lunch at school.  Makes me so mad!

That's great but just like that woman and her daughter don't know how much you care or give to people, you know next to nothing about her or her situation.  So I don't see why you would assume that she's lazy or ungrateful.  That just seems really classist to me.

Well, I'm stupid so I guess I don't really know any better.  For you to judge that I have no heart makes you no better than me, no matter who you voted for.

The federal government reimburses the schools for those meals.  Our kids who are on food stamps are on the free/reduced lunch program.  They also feed the kids breakfast and lunch during the summer.

I never said that I am better than you or that I'm always right, and I don't think that.

But yeah it upsets me when people make assumptions about someone they know nothing about, because that person comes into a school looking for food for her and her daughter and leave for whatever reason.  Because those assumptions are incredibly hurtful, and yes they smack of moral superiority and thinking that you're better than that person.

Julie didn't make any assumptions that stopped someone from eating..?

ANDPLUSALSO... if the person was genuinely really and truly hungry I think they would be willing to wait to get food.

But whatever, I'm done with the post now.
