To register or not to register

Hello! Getting married in Jamaica in November. Everyone was sent an announcement/invitation- turns out not one person can afford it. This is just fine with us, however things are now getting complicated. Friends of the family are throwing us a "wedding shower"- basically a party for both men and women. We are so excited to have an opportunity to celebrate with everyone, but aren't sure about including a registry on our invite (I would absolutely include a "No Purchase Necessary" line). Some people are insisting that we do, saying that we deserve gifts just like every other couple. I, however, am weary. Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated!!!

I would register but not advertise it, that way if someone asks and wants to buy you a gift, they may. But by no means place your registry on your invite (who is doing the invite? Wouldn't it be your friends? Not you, correct?)
