Texas-Dallas and Ft. Worth

Friend making cake-cost and contract question

FI and I have a friend who's an amazing baker and will graduate from pastry school in the next year. We decided to have her make cupcakes for our wedding, and she's on board as long as we can find her a kitchen big enough (which I think we can).

I definitely want to sign a contract, both for our protection and hers, but I'm not sure what all needs to be included in that, and I'm not sure she will either, because this isn't something she's done in any sort of offcial capacity before.

I also want to figure out what to pay her. Of course we'll pay whatever the cost of the materials to make the cupcakes, but what should I pay per cupcake on top of that? (The wedding will hopefully be around 100-120 people, but aboslutely no more than 150) What's about an average price for this area?

Any advice much appreciated!

Re: Friend making cake-cost and contract question

  • I would let her set her pricing, I would assume she would stay low since she needs to build up her portoflio, and if she is going to give you a discount or if this will be her gift to you she can tell you that too. There are ocmmercial kitchens that can be rented for abour $25 for a few hours, I think there are some near Ft. Worth. Also I would leave the contact wording up to her as well, if this is what she is going to do as a business then she will need one anyway.

    hope this helps.

  • I agree that if she is going into business, she will need to have a contract.  You can probably google it and get some forms online, but to be on the safe side she might want to have a lawyer draft a contract.  Or someone else who deals with contracts a lot (a Realtor, maybe?).
