It really depends on your cake person. We are using our caterer for the food and cake. When we went for our tasting, all the darker cakes (chocolate, red velvet, etc) were suprisingly dry. I thought the french vanilla was just going to be plain and boring but it was spectacular! I chose that for the brides cake. I was suprised because I am a chocoholic haha. Once you pick a place, go in for a testing and dont limit yourself to your normal comfort zone. Try a variety and ask what their specialty is. If they have a flavor that they pride themselves on or that sells the most - there MUST be a reason. Good luck!

I agree, it will depend on your vendor and what you like at your tasting.

Traditionally, the groom's cake is usually chocolate.  My husband didn't want a groom's cake so we just made one of our layers in the bride's cake chocolate.  Our flavors were white with raspberry filling, chocolate with ganache filling and tres leches (my favorite).

My bride's cake was white with a strawberry and cream filling. I am not generally big on fruit fillings but this was fresh strawberries and cream and sooo good, so it may vary based on your bakery. For the grooms' cake, it was chocolate and there were two different fillings, a chocloate mousse and a cappucino mousse.

Our Brides cake will be white with strawberry creme filling on one layer and amaretto cream on another layer.   Grooms cake is chocolate ganache or something like that.

My husband isn't a big fan of chocolate.  His favorite cake is strawberry-so that's what we went with for his grooms cake.  For the wedding cake we did the bottom tier half butter rum, half grand marnier.  For the middle layer we did german chocolate and for the top tier it was amaretto.

I would love to do vanilla cake with peanut butter buttercream and strawberry preserves filling as one flavor and almond cake with apricot filling for the other flavor, but I *guess* I should let my FI pick one of the flavors Wink

We ended up with lemon cake with raspberry filling and buttercream frosting for the bride's cake and chocolate with chocolate filling and buttercream frosting for the groom's cake.  I never thought I'd go with lemon, but that combination was just so bright and fresh that I couldn't turn it down.  I'm usually a huge fan of chocolate, but the chocolate didn't really impress me.  But DH liked it enough to choose it for his cake.  I secretly wished he'd used the cookies and cream filling, though :)  That was also very tasty.
