Reception at Omni Convention Center Downtown Dallas.....thoughts??

Has anyone considered having reception at the Omni Convention Center in downtown Dallas?  What were your thoughts?  I meet with them Saturday.  Having the toughest time deciding on a venue.  Thoughts on receptions at hotels in general?  Any help will be greatly appreciated!  I'm so lost!  Thanks!

I can only speak to hotel receptions in general since I had one.  While it's not for everyone, I loved having a hotel wedding.  It was so convenient since we had a lot of OOT and I loved having them at the hotel--one of my best memories is coming down for the rehearsal and seeing everyone in the lobby and bar.  I got married in a small boutique hotel which gave it an intimate feel--we pretty much had the run of the whole place.  I loved getting ready in the suite and staying the night before the wedding at the hotel with my BM and MOH as well as staying there on the wedding night and having brunch with everyone the next morning.  Our reception was beautiful and I loved that most everything was done for us.  It's also nice because if you or your guests want to keep the party going at the bar, that's an option also and it's also very convenient for OOT guests.  I loved everything about it.
  • I am in the same boat as you.  I am looking at having a hotel reception and really liked the Sheraton downtown Dallas 38th floor.  Anyone have any other suggestions? I have been to several places, but so far I like the Sheraton the best!

  • I think a wedding at the Dallas Omni would be really nice.  I've been to receptions at the Joule and the Magnolia.

I thought the Joule was too small for the large number of guests the day I was there, but the family also rented the rooftop pool and bar, so guests could escape up there and have a drink poolside, which was very cool.

The Magnolia is awesome.  No question.

  • Ditto everything Stephie said. we have so many OOT guests, that I am looking forward to everyone being together there following our rehearsal.

I'm not so good with the advice... Can I interest you in a sarcastic comment?

My boss got married at the Stoneleigh (which was actually my second choice but it was booked for my date anyway).  It was beee-u-tiful.  I am more a fan of smaller boutique hotels than chains.

I also looked at the Mansion--it was a little old school for my taste and I just assumed it would be too expensive.  However, not long after I got married, a Knottie was in a friend's wedding there and it looked awesome and she said it was actually not that expensive at all and has a nice rooftop patio for pictures.

The Sheraton Plaza on the Hill in Arlington is also popular and an alternative to a traditional ballroom.

I got married at the Melrose which has an outdoor terrace for the ceremony.  It's definitely for a smaller wedding though--120 or less.  Another ceremony option is the Methodist Church right across the street.
  • I am getting married in May at the Omni Park West near Las Colinas.  We are getting a great deal (because we booked a year ahead) and it will be so nice for our OOT guests (70% of our list).  Hotel weddings are nice for you because there is less work with the caterer and alot of your decor already available.  I am very excited and encourage you to take the plunge :)

  • The Magnolia is absolutely beautiful and has a fun art deco style. I decided on the Magnolia for my Sorority's formal. They were so easy to work with and the food was great.

Ditto on the Sheraton's 38th floor- the views are stunning.

Also agree with the Stoneleigh- very beautiful and unique, but may be a bit small.

Hotel Zaza also has great food and really fun decor if you are open to Uptown. They have spaces for up to 300 guests.

Although it isn't exactly a hotel reception room, have you thought about Union Station? It is connected to the Hyatt Regency via an underground tunnel and might be a different alternative.

Nylo has been talking for months now about a Downtown Dallas location, I believe it will be just south of I-30. Not sure when they are going to open, but every experience I have had with Nylo has been more than satisfactory.

  • Thanks ladies!!  I went to visit the Omni Downtown and it's not going to work for me :(.  They have a beautiful ballroom with ceiling to floor windows however it looks as if it will only seat about 100 comforably and still have dance floor.  They offered to also give me the adjoining conference room.  But I do not want my guests split up and the thrill of the conference room is not up to par with the ballroom (no windows, etc).  Great ballroom for a wedding with 100 guest count.  My guest count is 150-200.  Depending on the venue and rate.  I need to decide by end of this month for an October 13, 2012 wedding so wish me luck!  Thanks again for all the suggestions!!

  • They might already be booked on your date, but the Dallas Omni has multiple different ballrooms that fit different numbers of guests.  I toured the facility before their grand opening and we looked at a grand ballroom that fit over 400 people - it had room seperators within as well.  I think I know the one you're referencing - that one was described as only a standing reception area to us (we were touring for corporate events).

The F&B minimums were outside of my price range at the Omni hotels and my FI didn't feel comfortable getting married in a hotel.

If you want windows check into country clubs as well - they typically have reception rooms with views of their golf course.
  • If you're not set on a hotel reception, I will pimp my venue.  We had our reception at Cityplace (in the loft) and it was just amazing.

  • The Fairmont? Saw a wedding there on the Style Me Pretty blog. Love that website.
