Christmas presents for dad

What's everyone getting their dad for Christmas?

I run into this problem every year since my dad also has a December b-day (today).  He  is near impossible to shop for because he's so minimalistic.  He likes looking for travel deals, watching football, hiking, and working in the yard.  But come on...after 20 some years of thinking of presents, I run out of ideas.  I made him sports coasters for his man cave for his birthday with scrapbook paper and tiles, but I can't think of anything for Christmas.  I would love to get him something for us to do together, but I don't have many ideas since he already has season tickets to every sports game he would ever want to go to.

Any ideas?

  • Hmm... I haven't given my dad a gift since I was about 8 (and he doesn't give to me), so I can't help too much. I love what you gave him for his birthday, though. What a cute idea!

  • I just ordered my step dad this sweatshirt from LL Bean it's heavy so he can probably wear this when he takes the dog for a walk or for food shopping laying around the house etc.

I also got my mom fleece pjs from here.  You could get him slippers or a robe?  LL Bean is great quality and lasts forever!!  You get a $10 GC for every $50 that you spend and it is free shipping.  So I placed to separate orders so I got 2 GCs!

Ugh my dad is the hardest person to shop for in the world.

I usually give him something and say "dad, you must like it, I'm telling you that you need this". I'd take a look around my parents' house and see if anything needs to be updated (like my dad's shirts or PJ pants, or think of something that is funny to him like how much he loves jelly belly (bought him a 3 lb bag of it for his birthday).

This year my dad started playing Angry Birds (yuck!) so I bought him a funny Angry Birds shirt. He loves to travel & wild animals so I got him a huge book of migrators, and I got him a headphone.

  • I am getting my Dad a Lowe's Gift Card easy, simple. Plus he loves getting GC's from Lowe's or Home Depot! :)

  • My dad is pretty hard to shop for because if he wants something he goes and buys it himself.  But when we were over for dinner the other night he was showing us an i-pod that he found.  FI plugged it in and it worked so for Christmas we are loading it up with my dad's favotive music and giving it back to him with a car charger and plug for his car. My dad actually seems excited about his recycled gift because now he will have music on his drive from NY to FL after Christmas.

  • My dad is hard to shop for as well.

I always get him a magazine subscription to his favorite fishing magazine

and one of the items on my dad's bucket list (which he formed after his heart attack) is to get down to the Florida Keys and fish - so I bought him a book all about fishin the florida keys and  seein' the everglades.

  • My dad is usually pretty difficult, but this year Groupon helped me out!  My dad is a "biker" guy (mid-life crisis Wink) and each summer he goes on a road trip.  I got my hands on one of his pictures from this road trip of his bike propped up in a really pretty plateau scene and had it printed on a canvas.  I did a canvas for my sister too since she just bought a new house and is still decorating (different pic though!).  They are pretty expensive unless you find some kind of offer, but they have them all the time.

Not something to do together at all, but this was my idea for the year.  Now to start thinking for next year....

  • Dads always seem the most difficult to buy for... this year, I actually painted him a portrait of his dog. I'm insanely excited because I know he's going to love it.

  • This year, we bought my Dad a book and a little gadget keychain to hang his keys on the wall with.

I like the idea of an experience together! Maybe tickets to a movie, or dinner together? It would feel weird to me to go to a restaurant with just my Dad, but when I think of it, it might be nice.

Yeah - I agree with the whole experience thing.

My dad and I are close in that way. He and I took a vacation last year - just the two of us - to North Carolina. It was the best vacation ever. He and I vacation similarly. We like to be going to the entire time - so we'd get up early and fish off the dock in the AM, kayak or walk the beach, play putt putt...I'd love to do something like that again..but man..my funds are draining right now. :(
