October HM Help!

My FMIL just told FI and I that she will pay for our HM...this is nothing crazy though...our budget is $2000 max. We are so blessed none the less! SO, we need ideas@ FI said, "no beach." We are outdoorsy people. The only problem is that there isn't much to do in the states during October. Any ideas? I've heard Lake Tahoe, but has anyone ever been in the Fall?

Any and all ideas appreciated!

Re: October HM Help!

  • H and I honeymooned in Fredericksburg in November and it was beautiful.  Spent the whole time touring wineries and eating German food.

I don't know anything about Tahoe, but skiing sounds like it would be fun, if the weather's nice enough!

    Maybe Santa Fe?

I went to Sedona last year and it was beautiful and relaxing and I can't wait to go back.  Lots to do outdoors there.  ETA:  Oh and the Grand Canyon South Rim is only 2 hours away.

My DH is planning a boys trip to Tahoe next year in October but I have no idea what the weather is like, what there is to do, etc.
  • There is a resort in Oregon that is on Groupon often. Kayaking, river rafting, hiking. I'm not sure about in October though.

We are just going to these cute little cabins north of the Oklahoma border. We are going to a wildlife preserve (we get to play with baby lions) and then gamble a little at Winstar. We are saving up for a big family trip to Destin next summer, so this is a perfect little honeymoon for us.

  • OH, you could also do Niagara Falls. FI is from up there and says the falls in October are AMAZING. And if it's early enough in October they haven't shut all the good summer attractions down yet.

  • Thanks ladies! Sedona sounds amazing! I was also looking at Mackinac Island (may be more than we want), and Gatlinberg, TN....any experiences with these locations?

p.s. I LOVE Fredericksburg! I went to school at TxSt so FI and I used to road trip all over hill country! :)

We used to live in Carson City (just over the mountains).  There shouldn't be very much snow at that point, but it should be fairly cold/cool.  That is a beautiful area and I wishI went back more often.  Definitely consider it!
  • Agree, Tahoe is beautiful! The weather will be fairly cool but also refreshing.
Have you thought about Vancouver or Washington State? There are some beautiful resorts up there. Oregon is very pretty too!
  • We went to Tahoe two years ago in October, as fall is usually great there! Of course the year we went, it rained all week. That said Santa Fe is also beautiful that time of year, as is the east coast with all of the fall foliage, do ending on how late in the month you get married. i've also heard Arkansas is gorgeous in October!
  • We are getting married October 20, so it will be just a tad later in the month! Arkansas is definitely an option also!

I grew up in Michigan and went to Mackinac Island a few times as a kid. I wish I remembered more ... I just remember that it was cute, you couldn't take cars on the island (just bikes and walking), they're known for their fudge, very picturesque.

I think I also went to Gatlinberg as a kid. I'd choose TN over MI for a honeymoon, but maybe I'm biased since I grew up in MI. It's chilly in October there!

<div>Hot Springs would be wonderful!  My sister lives there and my grandparents lived there when they were alive.  We always loved going.</div>

  • Ben and I tentatively planned a weekend in Hot Springs but ended up going to Vegas instead (which I think would also be a great HM! October is a fun time to go there.)  But anyway, here is where we were going to stay in Hot Springs:

  • I am  now loving the idea of Hot Springs! It is fairly close to home so we don't have to spend a lot of money of travel, and Lookout Point is absolutely ADORABLE! Thanks so much for the help ladies! I am passing on the suggestions to the FI! :)
