PP gave you great advice. Along with what kind of wedding you want and how many guests you'd like to have, also figure out what your budget is.

I never really did choose a color scheme, and all my BMs were out of state as well. I had pink linens on the tables (my favorite color), but my BMs chose their dresses in whatever pastel color they liked best. (I just told them to pick a knee-length-ish dress in chiffon-like material in a pastel color. I suggested David's Bridal as a place for them to shop since they are all over, but they were free to buy their dress from wherever they liked. One girl got hers from Macy's.) I've heard of a lot of other brides on the boards that just pick the length, fabric, and color and let BMs choose their own dresses that fit that criteria. Davids Bridal and Alfred Angelo (and others) have locations all across the U.S.

Also, because I didn't have family/friends here and wasn't interested in planning all the details, and my budget allowed it, I hired a local wedding planner to help me book my vendors and take care of the details. There are planners at various price points -- I'd assumed since I wasn't having a huge-budget wedding I couldn't afford one, but I was happy to realize I could. It helped me a lot.

First of all, it's not your bridesmaids' job to help you plan.  It's nice to get their input, but not necessary.  You are the one getting married, after all.

Are you getting married in a church?  If so, you need to contact that church ASAP, as some churches have a "waiting period" of sorts, during which time you have to go through some marriage counseling.

Figure out a guest list so you can determine how big of a reception venue you need (or pick a venue and then determine the size of your venue).

Ditto the PP.  First establish your guest list/size and budget.  You really can't do anything without those two.

Don't worry too much about colors--just use whatever colors you love.  David's Bridal is a good choice for BM dresses since they are a national chain.  (Personally I think their Pool blue color would be beautiful for a winter wedding.)  You could also just let them choose their dresses as MarieSD did or have them all choose a basic black dress and then have flowers and decor in the colors you want.  As you start to think about and choose a venue, your vision of your wedding will develop.

Black and white weddings are very beautiful (Kim K just had one!)  But if you want to add color, anything goes with black and white.  If you Google "black and [insert color here] wedding", inspiration boards will come up under Images and those can really help.
