Cakes!

So my mom is helping me with choosing a bakery for wedding cakes! She was very interested in Creme de la Cream in Funky Town. I saw reviews-all were great on wedding wire. I went to the site. For the cheapest filling for approx 150 people it was around 700.00 just for one. My FI will be more cus his is gonna be a Texas Tech cake....maybe in the shape of Jones Stadium or a double T...just something so his stands out more. Plus its like 75.00 delivery I think. Well the Piazza had open house and we tasted Cake Guys. It was good....good reviews. Apparently you can only choose out of what they have and you can't make up your own cake. But...VERY reasonable cost. Opulant cakes has free delivery (YAY!) and the cakes are YUMMY! However, I saw on wedding wire really bad comments that I'm scared of. The comments pertained to customers calling them and Opulant never returning phone calls...plus cakes not looking exactly how the picture showed. I don't know their pricing either. So I'm kindda not really wanting to use them...My mom and I loved a raspberry liquior cake from Delicious Cakes in Southlake. However, again.....pricy. They compared to Creme de la Cream.

So...we are in a sticky situation. Any bakeries around mid cities-nrh-keller/southlake that you reccommend??? Is anyone using Opulant-Cake Guys-Delicious Cakes-Creme de la Cream???

feedback is GREATLY appriciated! :)

Thank you :)

We are using Ruth Robbins out of Southlake, "Tastefully Yours Cakes." They are DELISH and her prices seemed really good. The main cake is 3 tiers and was $450.00 and FI's groomscake, which will be a lot of work for her because its a bass fish and he wants it standing up, was around $350.00 I forget how many each feed but we are expecting around 175 people so they will cover that amount + more. She is really sweet and like I said, her cakes are soooooo good!

This is a possible cake for FI's cake!! I want his to stand out more than mine :)

I would also look into Sweet Memories in Keller. At the FW bridal show, the cake was DELISH. At the Gaylord one, it was a little drier, but I'm assuming it was some sort of circumstancial issue. We are going to schedule a tasting with them when the time comes. They also offer catering.
Disclaimer: Please excuse the above comment. I'm probably freaking out because there is less than one month to go. Thank you.

Our baker is Texas Star Bakery in Hurst. For my wedding cake, which servers about 120, and for FI's hockey puck cake, which serves about 70, it will be $614 including delivery. Pictures of inspiration are in my BIO. I know their prices start at $1.50 a slice and go up to $4.75

I think Stephiehall used Cake Guys she liked them alot I think. I know I didn't like that a) I wouldn't get a tasting until I put a deposit down and b) that I wouldn't be able to custom design the cake either.

    Hope this helps!

    Colleens Cakes in Keller.

I used the Cake Guys and they looked and tasted amazing.  I did choose from their pre-designed cakes to save $$ but it was gorgeous and no one could have possibly known.

They will make custom cakes for you, you don't have to choose from the pre-designed ones....but it will cost more.

Look into Lisa's Creative Cakes in Azle. She is $3/slice and is REALLY good and really talented.

Also you might try Sandy Chang with Sandy's Unique Imprint in South Fort Worth

Im not much help because I haven't actually gone anywhere to taste test, etc, but I did find this bakery on the web-- called the Elegant Cakery in Southlake.  The pics that they have of their cakes are awesome, and the prices are on the website. Wedding cakes start at $400 and go up from there.  Here's the website  http://elegantcakery.com/default.aspx

If anyone already has any feedback about this bakery, I'd like to know as well :)

Dallas Affaires is about the same cost wise but they were amazing!!!  They have a picture of Texas' stadium as a cake on their website but, when I asked about Kyle Field, she said it nearly killed her.  It never hurts to call and the worst that could happen is that you taste some really awesome cakes!

I second the suggestion of colleen's cakes - by far and away the best tasting and most professional we have worked with.

You can customize your cake with The Cake Guys and have a tasting--just not with the SI package.  I loved my cake.  I posted in the other thread.

Oh, Candy Haven in Denton is super heavenly delicious as well.  They do custom cakes there but I'm not sure of their pricing.

My choice came down to Delicious Cakes & Candy Haven in Denton. I ended up going with Candy Haven but it's out of your area range. I would have been just as happy with Delicious Cakes but everyone loved the amaretto cake at Candy Haven. Just FYI in case he didn't tell you, at Delicious Cakes they'll give you a free 8" cake on your 1 year anniversary. I loved how the guy at Delicious Cakes wanted to do a unique design for us. At Candy Haven I had to choose a predesigned cake to save money.

I also tried CucaLu cakes, Opulent Cakes, and Elena's Cakes but they didn't taste as good to me as my top 2.

I went with Candy Haven, but the Cake Guys also said that they could do the custom gaming cake that we wanted.  It's not a stadium, but I know that it will take more time than a normal groom's cake.  We went with Candy Haven because we loved the cake tasting, and the price was the best out of the 3 that we taste tested.

I was actually considering Creative Cakes...her cake was amazing at the bridal show and she was so nice!  I think she said $3 a slice.

I am using Opulent cakes and I'm getting married at the Piazza in two weeks...I will let you know after the wedding how it turned out!  I was also at that open house!!!  I wasn't a fan of what the Cake Guys brought to it.  It seemed kind of dry.

I am from Azle originally and know Lisa through mutual friends.  She has done several peoples cakes that I know and they were all gorgeous and tasted great! She books up very fast and you have to book atleast 6 months in advance, I think.

you and me both! Cake Guys I thought didn't have the moisture that Opulent had. Question-the only thing I'm hesitant about with Opulent is that when you call them they never answer or get back to you? She was so nice at the Gaylord show, and my dad loved that white chocolate raspberry one (so did I and one of my MOH). I'm just concerned on the responsiveness/service that I've heard about.

I found another one on the Piazza's list. But I've not heard anything from them. They are Simply Cakes LTD. I called them and she said to come by after the holidays to do a testing. I'm wondering if that might be too late.

I had to call Opulent to make my final payment yesterday.  I called around 10:00 am when they open and left a message.  They called me back around 2:00.  I guess they take a while getting back with you, but I didn't really notice it being a problem.  When I initially called to set up a meeting I think I got right thru and set up a time, met with them, and booked that day!  :)

Wow, I hope The Cake Guys aren't going downhill.  Our tasting and our cake was delicious.  I do think that their strength is not necessarily their cake but their fillings, however.   Without their fillings, I don't think they are anything special.

I'm getting married at The Piazza and am using Texas Star Bakery in Hurst.  I did a tasting at Opulent and theirs was much more expensive than Texas Star and I didn't like the taste of their cakes one bit.  I take it back, their cakes were fine, but their frosting was gross, IMO.  Michelle (the coordinator at Piazza) also told me to call Colleen's Cakes in Keller, as she does great cakes and their brides are always happy with them.  I only had one weekend to try cakes though, and Colleen's was booked, plus I love Texas Star so that was an easy choice for me.

The Cake Guys did a tasting for the D'ville's Chamber of Commerce open house. I was glad I tried it, but I was not impressed with their chocolate cake at all. It tasted like cinnamon. I hate cinnamon.

I went to a recent wedding and they used the Cake Guys. The cake was beautiful but the cake started to fall apart at teh reception...Huge bubbles started to form and the icing pretty much fell apart. Im not sure if this is common for them. I guess I could understand if it were a outdoor wedding but the wedding was indoors.

Colleens Cakes! Go to a tasting, it is totally worth it. She charges $3.50 a slice and delivery is included.
  • edited December 2011
What is Colleen's Cakes service area? We're getting married in Lakewood. In my mind, the more travel required the less secure I am with my cake being delivered lol.

Has anyone used Jackie Spratt or Romano's Bakery in Dallas?

Try Panini Bakery in Dallas on the Highland Park border (Sherry St and Douglas).  Excellent cakes...very reasonable  (works out to be about $3.50 slice but they charge by the layer).
