When to register?

When are you going to register? My planning book says registering 8-10 months before the wedding, but i'm afraid that items will sell out or go out on clearance. I don't think there is anything worse than going to store to get a gift off a registry and not be able to find anything! Btw, will probably have 1 shower a few weeks before the wedding.

Re: When to register?

  • If you're wedding is truly June 2012, then you can definitely register now. Although there is a possibility that an item will be discontinued, you can always go back & check it a month or so before your shower to make any needed adjustments.

Most will advise you not to register during holiday season because many items can be seasonal and therefore not available during your shower time. That's passed now, so you should be fine. Have fun!
  • Yeah you should get on that.  A lot of the more expensive things - china, pots & pans, knives, etc are carried for years.  It's unlikely they're going to sell out now for a June 2012 wedding.  Even the more seasonal items - sheets, towels, etc still often go for 4- 6 months before they are restocked for a new season.  And places like PB and WS keep the same basic patterns of linens for years.

  • Most "books" I've looked at for wedding planning say 6-8 months but I REALLY don't understand the logic in that at all.  Your prewedding parties will not be until 1-2 months before the wedding (unless you have an engagement party) so why would you register for things that far in advance?  Anywho we did 3 months in advance and with doing it that close we STILL had things that went on clearance in that time frame which is why I advice against anything more than 6 months.

I had so much going on with the wedding planning the last thing I wanted to worry about it changing/updating our registry all the time however it was pretty difficult to go in and do the registry 3 months ahead...I was super busy and registry took WAY longer than we expected so I suggest 4-6 months in advance.

  • Fiance and I registered for our April wedding two months ago, so I think you're fine to start registering for June.  Go ahead and take care of it when you have time one afternoon or evening.

Whoever said it was supposed to be happily ever after is a big fat liar.
  • My FI and I registered for our March wedding in November. We had to be careful to avoid the seasonal items, as those wouldn't be available after the holidays (and we were warned about that when we did the registry). But we had a few people who said that they wanted to get us Christmas gifts based off our registry. So we went ahead and did it... otherwise I think we would have waited a bit and maybe done it at the beginning of January. My shower is at the end of this month, and even though I'm super busy, I don't know that we (personally) needed to do ours that soon.

But I think it's personal preference. And it all depends on how much stuff you're going to have on there.  We didn't have china, stemware, that kind of stuff. Ours was very basic.
