Re: When should I start my registry?

  • It depends on your family. I started mine over a year out because my family was bugging me to. They got us a lot of engagement gifts. But if no one is going to do that then I'd wait. Things do get discontinued and thats less likely to happen if you wait until right before your shower/wedding.

You can start it whenever - just know that if you're more than 6 months out some things will get discontinued.  That doesn't bother me though because it gives me a chance to "go shopping" again, lol.

  • You can start it whenever you like!  I will say that things that have patterns or a style - dishes, linens in particular - are more likely to be discontinued.  Meaning if you get your heart set on a particular china pattern, it might not be there in a year.  For that reason, I would recommend registering for things that have been around for ages (appliances, for example) that don't change models often and then add things that suite your taste closer to any showers or the wedding.
  • Ditto PP. You can start whenever, but check back every few months to see what's been discontinued. The thing I see that gets dicontinued the most is any type of print bedding, as it tends to be pretty seasonal. So I would say to wait until closer to your wedding to search for a bedding pattern that you like.

Also, you can ask your registry consultant what items tend to change the most in their store, that way they can help you avoid putting too much on your registry that might be discontinued.
  • I'd usually say don't worry about it until four to six months out depending when any showers are planned, although in your case you might want to go a bit on the early side (maybe mid-November) if you think people might want to select items off your registry as holiday gifts.
Whoever said it was supposed to be happily ever after is a big fat liar.
  • Hey Ladies..

Thank you for your inpute. I really appreciate it... I think I will wait until the fall and start the registry. It seems like a lot of fun... LOL..

  • I am a June 2013 bride too, you should come over and post with us on the June 2013 board :). I am planning on registering in the fall, I agree with a PP that it will be useful around the holidays, but really you can start it whenever you want.

We started registering about 8 months ago (Wedding is 10/14/12).  A lot of people were bugging us so it was an easy thing to knock off the list.
  • We started ours about four to five months ahead of the wedding, and that was not enough time! We started out having fun with it, but then it got stressful. I think you should start as early as you can, but be prepared that some things will be discontinued. You can at least start with some items or have a plan of where you're going for what. Registering is SO fun if you don't put it in a time crunch. Good luck!
