When to register (long engagement)?!

So I've read a thousand and five times to register, and register early.  My only problem is that FI and I are having a long engagement -- we got engaged when I wasn't quite 18 yet, I'm now 20 and we're not quite sure when we're tying the knot.  We're thinking sometime in 2014, but nothing's official yet.  I don't want to register too soon and seem gift-grabby, but at the same time, I want to make sure we give our someday-guests enough time.  We just moved into our house a few months ago, so it would make a little more sense to register now than it did before.  Help!  I don't want it to be all about the gifts (because it's totally not at all!) but I do want to allow enough time because I feel like once we decide to make the move, it will be quick.  Could I get some advice?!

  • If you don't even have a date set, believe no one will be out buying gifts for you now. Probably not for a year from now. No one started buying off our registry until like 3 weeks before my shower. No one is getting antsy to buy you gifts when you don't even have a date picked.

Hold off until at least a date has been set.  The reason to register early is for those who announce an engagement and set a date right away.  Some people, when giving an engagement gift, might select something from the registry.  That's not the case with you two so there's no reason to register now.
  • I agree with PP.  We have a date set and we don't plan on registering for at least another 4 months, probably when we send out or STD's, if not later.  When you register too early you run the risk of items being discontinued.

  • We just registered (8 months out). There are a few guests asking where we're registered. I have the feeling that they want to find something that they'd enjoy giving and wait to see if it goes on sale, so I think 6 - 9 months is a good time frame.
  • Please dont register until you have a date at least, I dont understand what the point would be and as a guest to a wedding/shower I would never buy something for someone that doesnt even have a date. We registered about 8 months before the wedding and that was only because people wanted to buy us things off of it for Christmas.

  • We set our date for May 17, 2014. We just registered last week actually. Reason being, there is china and some of it for the shower and day of. I figure, for our birthdays this year, i can tell people to get us something off the registry.
But we have our date set. I think once that is established, you're good to register and list it on your wedding website. You can email people that your website is up and where your registered, then for Save the Dates, you can put your website link on there for them to look at as well!
