registry items not available?!?!

A friend of mine just had her bridal shower. When people went to Bed Bath and Beyond to get gifts off the registry, many of the items they did not have in the store (they needed to be ordered). Her FI and her went in person to scan the items about a month before the shower. Is there anyway to avoid this from happening so that your guests don't have to order things in advance on your registry?

Re: registry items not available?!?!

  • I was just going to ask the same thing.  We finished registering today at a few places, and some of the items we scanned in the stores do not show up on the registry as available now.  My fiance says that since the wedding is 4 months away, they may become available.  I'm worried that when my guests check the registry it won't have anything for them to choose from.I'm wondering if we should change our registry, or just let it be and see what happens.  As my fiance said, there is no guarantee that the items that show up as available today will be tomorrow.I'd love to hear if anyone else has had this same experience, and what you did. Thanks!
  • My guess is that items are moving quickly in the stores because it is still big time bridal season. I think all you can really do is make sure your important items haven't been discontinued. On one of our registries, some items are marked as "not available in stores" when I know we scanned them at the store and they are still there!!
  • Many of the items are just not kept in stock.  I've had that happen regularly at Macy's, esp with china and crystal.  They are kept in a central location and have to be ordered.  they just keep a display in the store.
  • I guess u can tell ur close family and friends to "spread the word" to other guests that things might need to be ordered in advance...has anyone ever registered for a honeymoon through a travel agent?
  • I had this problem far less with Bed Bath and Beyond than with my other registries.  Not every store can carry every item and if you registered at a larger store and you guests are shopping at smaller stores, this might become an issue.I will say that BBB is excellent at ordering and I never found it to be such an inconvenience to order instead of buy in-store.Then again, I usually don't wait until the last minute to buy shower gifts, either. If your guests do order from BBB and the item won't arrive in time, they'll wrap up a "gift" for the guest to bring to the wedding/shower.  It contains a cardboard piece of paper that says what the gift is and when it will arrive. The best was to be sure that you will have available items is to not register early (this will cut back on discontinuations) and check the registry on a regular basis to make sure things are still available.
  • Thanks duckie! Good ideas!
  • You may have registered for some items that are only available at select stores. I have heard of this happening to a to a lot of people. when I shopped off a registry they said it happens because some stores are smaller than others.
  • Thanks for the info everyone.  I feel better about it now.
