Registering help

My fiance and I have been living together for a few years now so we have everything we would generally need, in terms of household stuff. But, we would like to renovate our house in the future. Would it be tacky or rude to ask for things like gift certificates to Home Depot, Sears, Home Hardware, Rona, etc.? I was thinking this would offset the cost of, say, new flooring or paint. I would also register for things like new pots and pans, bed sheets, maybe some camping stuff for people who don't like buying gift certificates. (Like my Grandma. haha! She hates giving money or gift certificates because she thinks it's very impersonal.) I was just wondering what you guys thought about this idea?

Re: Registering help

  • I wouldn't specifically register for GCs (I don't know if you even can) but spreading the word that you are planning a renovation and will need to get a lot of stuff from Home Depot would probably get you there.  You could do a registry at sears and include some of the tools you need, as well as the camping stuff you mentioned.  If you do a small registry somewhere, people will get you GCs to that store, whether or not you ask for them.
  • I was in the same situation.  Yes, you can put gift cards on almost all registries now, next to gifts and I have never known someone to find this offensive.  Also, I think HomeDepot has a wedding registry so you may be able to add paint and accessories.  I know you could at Lowes, but they have since discontinued there registry program. All we registered for was some upgraded kitchen items, some new sheets and china.  We couldn't decide on what home upgrades to do at the time, though we were registered at Lowes for some things.  We ended getting almost all cash from people, without asking.  I guess the lack of variety, just lots of individual items, left people undecided.I would say disregard people here who say you can't ask for cards or cash due to ettiquite.  If someone askes what you want/need be honest.  It all depends on your family and friends and you know them best.  Hopefully they will know you too ;-)
  • Do it! My husband and I had a Jack/Jill shower and I wanted to register at Home Depot - he did not ! All of sudden he wants to do all of these projects that we don't have the tools for. Would have helped out tremendously, plus the guys may get more involved. Since then, I have seen a shower invite with BB & B and "Home Depot Gift Cards Also Appreciated" and they did get quite a few of them.
