Thank Yous

I just got a wedding gift in the mail today, and I've heard conflicting information about what to do when you get gifts before the wedding.  Some people say to open the gift right away and send a thank you (so that the gift giver knows that you received the item and that it didn't get lost on the way).  Others say that you wait until after the wedding.  What's the proper etiquitte (my attendees are pretty traditional if that makes any difference)? Also, if I am to send them before the wedding - My thank yous say my new name on them.  Technically that wouldn't be my name if I send them before the wedding.  Can I still send those thank yous, or do I have to wait until after the wedding to use them? Thanks in advance!!

Re: Thank Yous

  • It's not a pre-printed thank you.  It's a pretty stationary card that has our last name on the cover (my future last name). Thanks for the info!
  • i'd open it now (to be sure i didn't arrive damaged).  send the thank you right away.
  • Go buy some new pretty paper or note cards that don't have your new last name on them.  Use them now and then use the new monogram ones once you're married.
  • I would open and send the thank-you note right away, but I don't think its right to use your married name before the wedding.  I had some notecards with just my first name that I used for shower thank you notes, and I picked up some pretty packs of Crane's cards for other pre-wedding gifts.I saved the ones that said "Sara & Andrew" or anything with our last name until after the wedding.
  • You could also send them a card that says you got the package and can't wait to open it after the wedding and send an official thank you later.
