Register for Sterling Silver Flatware?

I was curious as to other brides' opinions on & experiences with registering for sterling silver flatware. Before starting our registry, it had never occurred to me that it was so expensive. Initially we decided not to register for it because we don't think many (if any) guests will buy it for us. I also don't want to seem like we are asking for extravagant gifts. But it seems to be such a "standard" wedding registry item that I'm wondering if we should just register for a relatively inexpensive set. For those of you who are registering now, are you including this? For those of you who are already married and registered for it, did you think it was worthwhile to do so?Thanks.

We registered for really nice flatware.  But I did not do Sterling Silver.  I did not want to have to deal with polishing it everytime I used it.   Sorry I know that does not answer your question, but I would rethink that decision.  There are very nice stainless steel flatware sets out there.

I agree with pp - I didn't go for silver due to the care needed. I don't want to polish it! We just selected nice SS flatware

If it's something you really want and will use, then put it on your registry. The chance of completing your settings is pretty slim, since the cost of one sterling spoon is more than a stainless place setting. Personally, I would rather have a nice set of stainless steel. No polishing and cheaper to add on to the set or replace pieces.

We went back and forth on it due to cost, and ultimately decided on high quality silverplate flatware instead. Sterling and silverplate get more beautiful over time and can be passed down over generations. Stainless inevitably looks worse over time. I couldn't be happier with our choice. We love having the good stuff, and use it often. FYI, if you use it often, it really isn't much work. If I lightly polish it once a year, that is a lot. Buy a tarnish resistant flatware chest and it is easy to look after. I say go for the sterling or consider silverplate if you are worried about cost and also want crystal, china, etc....

I did register for silver only because I already have my grandmother's set but it is missing a few pieces. I just registered for those missing pieces and a few new ones that have been added to the pattern since she started her set in the 1940's!!!

We were in Pottery Barn the other night, they offer 5 piece place settings of mismatched sterling silver for about $50 each. Mismatched settings wouldn't work for everyone's taste or go with every china pattern but I thought it was pretty neat. If I didn't already have sterling I would buy, I actually like how the pieces looked.

Ahhh, I'm struggling with this very question right now! I am in love with Towle's "Grand Duchess" pattern, but I'm afraid that registering for 12 place settings would be greedy... they're $300+ a piece! And Neiman Marcus has an entire service for 12 for several thousand dollars. SIGH.

I'm considering just registering for Oneida's SS "Michelangelo" pattern, to be completely honest. Who offers silverplate? I know Neiman's and Horchow have sets, but when you actually sign up to register, those lines aren't even available!
