Macy's Registery and Rewards Card

I registered at Macy's and don't have a rewards card but am planning on getting one. I thought I'd wait until I had a big purchase to make (because you get discounts the day you open it, right?), like my FI's suit. Well, some sneaky relatives found my registry and have already purchased items. My questions are: 1. Will I get "rewards" from those purchases after I get my Macy's card? 2. Is my strategy right that I should wait to get a card until I have a large purchase to make? 3. Is the rewards card even a great thing to have or not? TIA!

I'd check with the store about getting credit for the purchases already made; it's possible they won't count. I just signed up for the rewards card for the same reason; no one's bought anything off the registry yet (it's not live) so I wanted to get the benefit from the get-go. If folks are buying stuff from your registry already I wouldn't wait to get the card. Like I said, I just signed up for the card this week because I was told purchases wouldn't count retroactively. But verify this before you sign up, just to be sure. FI and I figured that it can't hurt to get bonus reward back from purchases off the registry, as we don't plan to use the credit card at all (high interest rate!). We ended up buying one thing off the registry ourselves to open the card, because it's been discontinued and will likely be out of stock well before our wedding. HTH!

That's a really good idea to buy something off your own registry. We were going to sign up the day we registered but the girl helping us wasn't from that department and didn't even know how to set up our registry so we could make changes online!

Macy's sends coupons all the time, so even if you dont have a big ticket item to purchase the day you open the account you'll have coupons to use very soon.

Haha, it was actually an accident that I bought it off the registry! I had intended to remove it from the registry first, then buy it, but I messed up by not telling the sales clerk in time. I'd like to fix the mistake, but FI said to leave it on there. I guess in the end it doesn't make a difference, cos no one else will know; it just feels weird to me. It wasn't my intention to "seed" the registry or anything. Ah well. Guess I should just be quiet and take credit for the good idea.

Just a FYI, if you purchase something off of your own registry w/your macy's card you get a higher percent back in rewards.  I think it is 10% but not positive
