How much to register for

Confused as to how much to register for. We live in a one-bedroom apartment, and while I would love a complete set of fine china and a Kitchenaid mixer, we don't have much space. Though I know it is completely against the rules of ettiquette to ask for money, since we don't own a place yet we are hoping many of our family members and friends will gift us in that manner. Question-one of my bridesmaids hinted my shower is coming in a few months and that I should register. With 100 guests for the wedding, fewer for the shower, approximately how many items are we talking? Figure most people do gifts for the shower, money for the wedding (that's what I usually do). Any positive advice from experienced brides in the same boat is welcome (no snarky comments please). Thanks!

Re: How much to register for

  • Don't go for a certain number of items, simply register for items you would like to have.

If you register for a smaller amount of things, many wedding guests will write a check.

What are your parent's storage situations?  Would your Mom or Dad let you store some larger items at teir home until you have more space?

  • We're in a similar situation with space, but I'm a registry slut so we're having everything sent to FILs until we move next year. (Except our Kitchenaid, which we already got. I'm not letting that thing out of my sight!) But if you can't store it somewhere, just upgrade things in a small-ish registry--sheets, towels, everyday dinnerware, small appliances. That way people can purchase something if they want, or give cash if they want.

  • Register for what you need; don't go for a specific number of items - though I admit, I'm guilty of probably putting too much on my registry, because I want to make sure people have enough to choose from.

See if your in-laws would be willing/able to store things for you until you have your own home, or take a look around your place to see where you might be able to store things yourselves.

Our gifts are going to FI's parents' place until we can buy a house.

  • I agree, register for what you need but it's also a chance to get the things you would like, even if you may not be able to use them right now. I have a similar issue, we live in a small 1 bedroom apt but thankfully will be able to store stuff in my FI's old bedroom at his parent's. I tried to stay away from decorative items that may not work once we do move into a bigger place (picking towel and bedding colors was a little difficult). And even though the KitchenAid won't work in our apt's kitchen right now, it's still on my list =)

  • We registered for about 50 different things. This may sound shallow, but I'm kinda hoping more for money than tons of gifts... so we registered for things we really needed.

  • Register for the Kitchen Aid, they're amazing!  It's worth it, even if you have to plug it in somewhere other than the kitchen :)
  • Don't worry too much about registering for a lot of things....my FI and I also have a lot of the things we would need to start our own home, and our plan is pretty simple. We're registering for the things that either need to be replaced or repaired, and as for the rest of the guests we're trying to figure out how to set it up so that guests (if they want to, of course) can help us pay for the honeymoon (such as chipping in for plane tickets, hotels, activities, etc). HTH

  • Thanks everybody! These responses help a lot! We could store some stuff at my fiance's house up in Rhode Island--it's a rental property but we have storage in the basement--but we really need $$$ more than stuff...I do want a KitchenAid though! What color, what color ;)))

  • Ha--I'm a sucker for red too!
  • I'm in the process of registering myself and I'll tell you what I'm doing. I registered for some appliances that we need/want, upgrades (new toaster, new blender, & etc), and stuff i want (video games haha). I'm also trying to give a variety in regards to price so more stuff is lower costs and fewer stuff is expensive which is hard for me since what i want is expensive.

I recommend adding whatever you want just keep a range of prices (the best you can) from $10 and less to over $50 (Target's recommendation). They suggest more for lower costs than for upper costs and I agree with that.

I live in a studio so I do understand what you're going through since I have less space, but where I live has storage and we have our own storage unit (long story behind it) and i'm sure his parents would let us store some stuff at their house :]

  • I put a lot on  my registry.. I had 3 different store registries and different price points for certain items. I wanted to give people options but in retrospect, I wish I hadn't registered for so much! I ended up with a lot of incomplete sets which I may end up buying later, but it would have been better to get cash (of course!) ;)
