Will your gift giving preferences change?

Before I got engaged and went through the process of registering, starting to receive gifts, etc I used to always gift people the pretty, decorative things on their registry. But now, being the recipient, I find that I'm most excited to receive the more practical items (dishes, flatware, good knives, towels, etc). As much as i love the pretty things we've registered for, it's crossed my mind that I may need to exchange some of these things we've recieved in order to complete sets of flatware, etc. So now I'm thinking that next time I buy a wedding gift, I'm headed right for the practical stuff. My question for you gals is, now that you've had a registry, etc will you change your own gift giving habits going forward?

  • I will be giving more practical gifts as well, and will always make sure my gift is off the registry. :-)

This probably sounds shallow but I generally give nearly no thought to what I purchase.  They registered for it, it's the price point I want to spend, done.  The only time I think about it is if I can't find something at the price point I want to spend and have to combine smaller items - then I try to find things that 'go together'.

I've always tried to do the practical things.  My mom likes to pick the things off the registry that the couple probably wouldn't buy on their own.  When my cousin got married, I felt bad because a lot of their practical items were still unpurchased (like their dinnerware and cookware), but people got them the "fun" gifts and decor.

We just finished registering yesterday, and almost everything is practical, mainly because we plan on buying next year and don't know what will look good in our future house as far as decor.
  • The things that changed were that I always give cash for the wedding gift and for the shower gift I never ever ever get something that is not on the registry.
