Registry and Gift Forum

How many is too many?

My FI and I were discussing registries the other night (where we would register, what kinds of things we'd like to include, etc.) and the question come up.  I can think of three places I'd like to register for physical gifts, but he suggested two others. We are planning on having only about 170 guests maximum.  Is is acceptable to have more than three resgistries?  When does it start looking greedy?

  • I have 4.  After setting up the first 3 I found everyday dishes that I LOVE from Crate and Barrel.  It's very small but people have bought from all 4.  If I didn't love something from every place I'd rather have 3.

  • What about just using Amazon? You can add items from multiple stores to their registry.
  • I don't know anything about how Amazon gift registries work.  Are they easy to set up?  Are they easy for the gift getters to use?

  • What are the 5 stores that you are choosing from? 3 is really the maximum you would need.

For example: 1 large national store (BBB, Macys, Kohls) and 1-2 specialty stores depending on your needs/taste (Crate & Barrel, Williams Sonoma, Sears, etc)
  • It's sort of regional.  I routinely see 5 or 6 down here.  We have 4.  Nobody seems to care, and if they side-eye that, oh well.  We have more than 300 guests and nobody is from the same part of the country.

  • I think 3 is too many.
  • BBB, Younkers (part of the BonTon family), and Kohls.  FI mentioned Target and Nebraska Furniture Mart.  IDK what you would put on a registry at a fruniture store.  Someone also suggested red box.

  • Here, three is standard, and four is not uncommon. I think five might be pushing it. I'm not sure if that's regional or just my circle, though. We're having three, one of which is an amazon universal registry.

My daughter is using Amazon. It's very simple for guests to use, yet I have had guests ask if she is registered at a real store. Some of the older people don't use/own computers and still others are wary of using a credit card online.

I would go with Amazon and one or two brick and mortar stores for the guests that actually want to do it the old fashioned way.

  • Thanks for all the input.  We haven't settled the issue yet, but we are looking at BBB, Kohls, Younkers (for housewares), and Sears (for tools and other hardware items).

  • I don't think more than 3 will make you greedy or something... If you still don't want to go for more registries, you can register on sites which offers to make registry from almost every store...
