When do you register?

My wedding is in 1 and 1/2 years. My aunt keeps pressuring me to register for gifts. I think it is to early. When is is appropriate to register for gifts?

Re: When do you register?

  • It is too early. Even if everything stayed available and in stock, you might not even want or need half the stuff on your registry by the time people start buying off of it.

I've seen some people on here register as early as a year before, but I think even that is pushing it.

FI and I registered with 10 months to go, but we are having a really small registry with mostly classic items (Crockpot, Cephalon pans, etc.) that are unlikely to go out of stock. Consider this when deciding.

Another consideration is that the earlier you register, the more time you will waste over the months obsessing over your registry. If you register kind of at the last minute, you can do it once and then let it go, instead of going back in and changing the color of the sheets, second-guessing your flatware, etc.

  • There's nothing wrong with looking, getting an idea of what you would like to register for, and making a list, but don't actually create a registry now.  Some of the items/patterns  you want might be discontinued in a few months.  Ditto edie to wait until the 9 month or less mark.

  • Yes.  Way too early!  6-9 months out as pp suggested is good, and a good idea to start looking at patterns and get an idea of things you might want to register for.  I had an eye on a china pattern over a year out, thank goodness they were still carrying it when we registered LOL.
Whoever said it was supposed to be happily ever after is a big fat liar.
  • I think 1.5 years is a little bit too early. YOur tastes will prob change between now and then, what you need in your house will change also.  6-9 months in advance is plenty of time. As long as you have it done before sending out invites is whats important.
