Better to start registry online or in-store?

I am looking to register at BBB, Williams Sonoma, and Macy's. Any thoughts on whether I should set up the registries in store or online at each of these? TIA.

  • I started my BBB registry online then went into the store.  I'm glad I did it this way because a lot of ladies post on here that the consultant walks around the store with you the entire time.  I hate being led around like a child.  Besides, when DH and I went in together we had a lot of fun registering and I don't think it would have been the same with someone leading us around.

  • I don't know where you should start, but make sure you do go to the store at some point. Chances are, some of your guests still don't order things online. Make sure most of your things are available in-store.
  • We started online and then went into the store.  There were certain things that we knew we wanted based on Cooks Illustrated reviews, so it was just easier to add those online rather than trying to figure out if the store had exactly what we wanted in stock.  We registered at BBB, Macy's, and Amazon.
  • Create the registry online, but then go to the store to add things.  From there you can add/take away/read reviews online and edit it from home.

I created two of my registeries online and it was so much easier than going in store to do it.  I loved the guy at BBB who helped us, he wasn't pushy at all, but he didn't copy all of our info correctly from the paper application to the computer.  He had our state listed as Vermont, not Virginia (VT vs. VA), he spelled my FI's name wrong, and he got the wrong zip code.  It was easy to fix online, but just annoying.  It's just simpler to do it yourself.

  • We started and did most of our registries online because we wanted to be able to look up reviews of certain items before adding to our registries. Then we went into the store to finish because we wanted to check out the quality of some items. It worked really well for us.
  • We set up the registries online (Macys and BBB) so that we could do the info entry ourselves- saved a bunch of time at each store. Then we actually went into the store and used the scan gun, and now we're editing online. Has worked well so far. I definitely recommend at least setting up the basics online before you go into the store.
  • Like the others, I started the registries online & then went in the store to pick out items. When we got home, I reviewed the registries & deleted any multiples. I also switched out some items that I could find better versions of online.

I did BBB and I didn't have any problem with anyone following me around or being pushy.
  • Thanks everyone!  This was very helpful.  I was leaning towards setting the up online and then going into the stores and this seems the way to go.

  • We started in the store and finished online. I think it is better to go to the store because you can see and feel the quality of things better. Once you are a bit more familiar with the store and with what you want, online helps a lot!

  • We're attending one of those C&B registry mornings in February and I'll add to it online after that. BB&B or Macy's will be our second and I;m not sure yet what order we'll do those in -- waiting until after C&B so we can see what gaps need to be filled.

  • We registered at Macy's in the store, and it was actually a pretty easy process.  Plus, it was a lot easier to get FI to participate in picking stuff out when he got to run around pointing the "laser gun" at things he liked, instead of trying to get him to look at pictures of things over my shoulder on my laptop.  Also, the setup process was fast and the consultant pretty much just handed over the scanner and left us alone to do our thing - no pressure at all - so that was nice.

  • Thank you ladies!  I was wondering about this as well.  Just set them up online and now we can go in and check things out in person!
  • I've started online, but we'll probably go in person this weekend. It's a pain in the ass planning stuff like this because we live two hours apart, and we just want to veg out together on the weekends when we can see each other.

I definitely want to go in person at least once so we can play with the laser guns. :D
