WARNING - Problem with REI Registry
WARNING to Couples!
Although we love REI, problems with their registry turned into a major headache for us, requiring several in person visits to the store and phone calls to our local store and headquarters to receive gifts.
The problem: if guests send your gift for pick up at the local REI store, REI does NOT inform the bride and groom, and the item does NOT show up under your name. In order to get those items, you have to know the name of the person who got you a gift and that they had it mailed to the store. (and usually a guest will buy a gift from yuor online registry, teh card comes with the gift and they assume you get it! Not true here).
We live far from most of our guests, and REI told us guests could skip the shipping cost if they shipped to the local store. We thought that sounded great, but were never warned of the glitch. So items were bought from our registry, sent to the store, but we were not informed. We even called and stopped in asking for the status of missing gifts and the staff didn't know of the problem so told us the gifts were probably still on their way (even though they were actually just in the back under different names). I thought registries were supposed to be an east part of weddings, but this required us to keep calling talking to different managers and headquarters to find out about gifts.
The second problem: Staff failures. We wanted of course to be able to know who sent something so we could thank guests! REI should have been upfront with us about the glitch. Instead when I called headquarters they said "When people call us about how to buy from the registry, we encourage them to forward the confirmation note to the bride and groom." Well i think most of us know that most people don't also call when they buy something online.
Point is, just a warning, see if they'll let you remove the ship to store option. Also a warning the REI staff was uninformed about how registry worked and gave us the run-around for weeks and weeks before resolving this.
